Commemorating Black History Month
Last year was the centennial of Harriet Tubman’s birth.
Born a slave in Maryland, she escaped at 25, returning 13 times over the next decade to rescue the rest of her enslaved family. She provided help to 70 more who would travel to freedom.
Ultimately, her circle would include the abolitionist John Brown and William Seward, Lincoln’s Secretary of State.
Tubman volunteered to serve with the 2nd South Carolina Volunteer Infantry (Colored).
After the war, she campaigned for women’s suffrage.
And she established a home for the aged in a house she bought from Seward.
