ABCT Fellows Status

ABCT Fellow status is awarded to full members who are recognized by a group of their peers for distinguished, outstanding, and sustained accomplishments that are above and beyond the expectations of their existing professional role. Because members’ career paths come with unique opportunities, the committee is sensitive to the environment in which the applicant was functioning, and we weigh the contributions against the scope of the applicant’s current or primary career.

Multiple Routes to ABCT Fellow Status

ABCT now offers 6 areas of consideration for Fellowship status:

  1. Clinical practice
  2. Education and training
  3. Advocacy/policy/public education
  4. Dissemination/implementation
  5. Research
  6. Diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Applicants for fellowship will be asked to endorse the area(s) in which they wish to be considered. These areas can be overlapping, but also have unique features. Endorsement of multiple areas does not increase the likelihood of selection as a Fellow; demonstrating outstanding, sustained effort in one area is all that is required. What guides the committee’s decision making is determining if an applicant has made an exceptional, sustained contribution that goes beyond their work role expectations.

Eligibility Requirements
  •  Full membership in ABCT for > 10 years (not necessarily continuous)
  • Terminal graduate degree in behavioral and cognitive therapies or related area(s);
  • > 15 years of professional experience following completing requirements of their terminal degree
  • Two letters of reference are required;
    • One letter of recommendation should be from an existing ABCT Fellow (a list of ABCT Fellows can be found below).
    • If the latter requirement is a barrier to applying, please contact the Chair of the Fellows Committee at [email protected], who will then assist in determining how to best handle this request.

The Committee encourages qualified and diverse applicants to apply.

All materials must be received no later than July 1, 2026. Each year a new ABCT Class of Fellows will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony at the ABCT annual convention. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact the Chair of the Fellows Committee at [email protected] with any questions.
