THE ABCT LIST SERVE INFO

Objectives

The ABCT List Serve provides an opportunity for the worldwide membership of ABCT to disseminate and share ideas and information concerning behavioral and cognitive-behavioral analysis, assessment, and therapy, broadly conceived.

The list is open to all members of ABCT. The List Serve members will determine the topics of discussion. All List Serve members are encouraged to be active participants. Committed groups of behavioral and cognitive-behavioral psychology professionals willing to share their ideas and interests will contribute to a vital and active List Serve.

Rules and Regulations

All members of ABCT are automatically part of the List Serve. If you wish to unsubscribe, you may contact Keith Alger; he will remove your name from the List Serve. Please allow approximately 10 days for this to take effect, although, in most cases, it will be sooner.

Our rules are simple, and are meant to promote useful and respectful interaction among professionals.

  1. Be courteous.
  2. The discussions on the lists are meant to stimulate conversation, not to create contention. Differences of opinion should be expressed in a professional manner.
  3. Keep messages as brief as possible (e.g., only "repost" essential text from previous postings.
  4. Use "subject" lines that are as informative as possible.
  5. When the purpose of a message is not clear from the subject line, or if the message is fairly long, write a brief (10-25 word) abstract at the beginning of the message so that readers can determine whether your posting is relevant to their interests.
  6. Direct messages or replies to the forum sub-lists only when you believe they will be of wide interest, otherwise, direct them to individual e-mail addresses.
  7. Be constructive and encouraging.
  8. Remember that this is an international forum, thus be sensitive to cultural, religious, and racial issues so that messages will not be misinterpreted.
  9. Offer comments that are collegial in tone, without unprofessional behavior or hostility (i.e. ad hominem personal attacks or any other malevolent behavior.) Libel (written information intended to harm another person's reputation) and slander (falsely spoken information which damages another) are prohibited.
  10. All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal materials are strictly prohibited.
  11. Use caution when discussing products. Information posted on the lists is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, slander, and antitrust laws.
  12. As ABCT is a not-for-profit and tax-exempt organization, the List Serve is to be used as a forum for the abovementioned aims and purposes (i.e. sharing of professional/scientific information) and not as a means of electioneering, advancing personal or another's professional gain, advertising professional services, or for any other personal or monetary profit/gain.
  13. Do not post commercial messages. The cyberspace term for this is spamming. Contact people directly with products and services that you believe would help them.
  14. ABCT allows posts announcing upcoming workshops, symposia, and other professional educational opportunities. To qualify, the following criteria must be met: one or more of the presenters must be an ABCT member; and the topic must cover CBT-related treatment, assessment, or research, or cover methodological approaches used in said research, or cover training or supervision aspects used in teaching CBT. There are no restrictions on the medium used (it can be a workshop, symposium, single- or multi-day, etc.) nor on sponsoring organizations. This rule specifically supersedes rules 12 and 13. There is a limit of one announcement per event, and there are to be no such postings sent during November until after the ABCT Convention nor posting for sessions that occur during the month of November, with the exception of posting regarding sessions connected with the Convention.
  15. ABCT retains the right to reproduce postings to this List Serve.
  16. Do not post any information or material protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner.
  17. Under no circumstances may List Serve members discuss pricing issues or any issues that would violate antitrust laws (e. g., a discussion of hourly fees is not permitted because it may violate antitrust law).
  18. When discussing Clinical Issues, client confidentiality must be maintained.
  19. Members are encouraged to list continuing education opportunities on Facebook.
  20. To use the ABCT Facebook page for research recruitment purposes, please follow the guidelines below:
    1. The individual submitting the request to recruit participants (or her/his mentor) must be a member of ABCT.
    2. The project must be approved by the researcher’s IRB, and a copy of this IRB approval must accompany the request.
    3. The material being posted must be limited to one paragraph and include a way for participants to contact the researcher.
    4. The study is consistent with ABCT’s mission.
    5. To submit a request to recruit participants on ABCT’s Facebook pages and/or list serve, please submit the following materials to ABCT's Director of Communications, David Teisler, CAE, at teisler@abct.org:
      1. The approval document from the researcher’s IRB. Please note: the title of the study must match the study being posted, and the submitted document must include the IRB stamp or other evidence of IRB approval.
      2. One paragraph describing the study and including contact information for the researcher (as well as the web-link for the study, if applicable).

Hints for Using the List Serve to Manage Emails

The List Serve has become a wonderful tool for our members. They are asking questions and getting answers and sharing approaches and getting referrals and all sorts of things. But not all things are important to all people. So, if you are getting List Serve emails you don’t want, or you want to organize emails you want to save for later, you can create a rule in most email software packages, such as Outlook, that flows messages to other folders, say a junk folder or a referral folder or “How to Make the Best Vomit Recipe.” Below are the steps you can take in outlook.

Create a rule from scratch

To create a rule by choosing your own conditions, actions, and exceptions, do the following:

  1. In the Navigation Pane (Navigation Pane: The column on the left side of the Outlook window that includes panes such as Shortcuts or Mail and the shortcuts or folders within each pane. Click a folder to show the items in the folder.), click Mail.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Rules and Alerts.
  3. If you have more than one e-mail account, in the Apply changes to this folder list, select the Inbox that you want.
  4. Click New Rule.
  5. Under Start from a blank rule, select either Check messages when they arrive or Check messages after sending, and then click Next.
  6. Under Step 1: Select condition(s), select the conditions that you want the messages to meet for the rule to apply.
  7. Under Step 2: Edit the rule description, click an underlined value if you have not done so already, and then click Next.
  8. Under Step 1: Select action(s), select the action that you want the rule to take when the specified conditions are met.
  9. Under Step 2: Edit the rule description, click an underlined value if you have not done so already, and then click Next.
  10. Under Step 1: Select exception(s), select any exceptions to the rule, and then click Next.
  11. To finish creating the rule, enter a name for the rule, and then select any other options that you want.

ABCT has always received support and encouragement from its extraordinary friends, a diverse group that includes members of the Association, relatives and friends of our members, and individuals who have benefited from cognitive-behaviorally oriented treatments. The benefits to ABCT are many and are as diverse as this group of supporters. But what benefits does a friend derive from the transaction?

An association with stability and quality
Since its inception in 1966, ABCT has functioned as a professional, multidisciplinary organization that fosters the application of behavioral and cognitive sciences to understanding human behavior, developing interventions to enhance the human condition, and promoting the appropriate utilization of these interventions. Today, donors know that an affiliation with ABCT puts them in touch with an established organization that is synonymous with quality, leadership, and learning. ABCT's reputation is global and its future unlimited.

What you can do
As one of, if not the leading organization supporting clinical science and evidence based treatment, we believe it is important to maintain this tradition and carry our important work forward. In order to do so, your help is essential. Donors have a flexible array of options wherein they can support one or more areas of theoretical, scientific, and/or practical application. For example, consider:

ABCT will proudly acknowledge your donation in the convention program, our member newsletter, and/or on the ABCT website.

We invite you to make a single contribution or a multi-year pledge to the endowment development campaign. Below are several options for your consideration. Naming opportunities are available for donations or pledges of $5,000 or more. We gladly accept MasterCard and Visa.

Remember ABCT in your estate planning
An important and overlooked means of ensuring that our work continues is by making a bequest to ABCT in your will. The Federal Government encourages such gifts by allowing an unlimited estate tax deduction. Oftentimes these funds are designated for the Fund for the Future, which insures the functioning of ABCT in perpetuity.

Financial advantages for the donor
Through planned giving, donor friends can make a lasting contribution that both benefits them and at the same time supports a great organization.

To learn more about how we can assist you in tailoring a contribution to meet your vision for the future and to support ABCT, please contact Mary Jane Eimer, CAE, ABCT's Executive Director, at 212-647-1890, mjeimer@abct.org, or by writing to Executive Director, ABCT, 305 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10001.
